Opal - Happy Nightmare Baby,w. Hope Sandoval cameo, official VIDEO, TV broadcast, likely Dec., 1987 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 19, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
SST Records' original video as broadcast on music videos TV program "Bombshelter Videos" from Seattle, likely from mid-December, 1987, with David Roback introducing it with Hope Sandoval & Suki Ewers with him. I Iike Hope's & Suki's cameos even though they don't speak or sing, but only fidget, smile, & laugh. Hope looks younger than her years as she's likely 21 here, surprisingly.

This is title song from the 1987 Opal album "Happy Nightmare Baby." Kendra Smith was singer. Prior to joining Opal, Hope was a friend of the band, & her duo "Going Home" sometimes opened for Opal at Opal shows dating back as far as 1985. Here's an audio upload of a 1985 Going Home set opening for Opal:

Evidence contained in some 2013 interviews/articles suggest Hope joined Opal November, 1987 replacing Kendra as Opal singer when Kendra quit the band mid-tour in the U.S. Hope recalls she received a call from Opal in NY in 1987 asking her to join & finish a tour with them. Opal was opening act for JAMC. A NY Times review of the Nov. 5, 1987 show mentions Opal opening with Kendra singing. There is a persistent story Kendra quit by walking off a London stage mid-set. [Later edit: Mazzy Star's drummer, Keith Mitchell, left comments in the comments section here putting the record straight (thanks Keith!), QUOTE: "Kendra did not storm off the stage and quit. She left after the show in Providence, RI on the Jesus and Mary Chain tour. We finished the tour with Hope and then toured Europe as Opal."
The Providence gig was Nov. 12, 1987.]

I have a recording of Opal with Hope from Victoria, BC, Dec. 14. 1987 (I've upped two songs from it to yt) . Victoria is just a ferry ride away from Seattle. It seems a good bet this Seattle TV appearance occurred during the same tour which would date it to mid-Dec., 1987.

In 1989 Opal changed their name to Mazzy Star.
I believe the "Happy Nightmare Baby" album was released approx. June,1987.

This video was previously a public video at YT from another uploader but got unexpectedly designated as "private" & stayed that way for over a year for unknown reasons, & became publicly inaccessible. It seems the original uploader has just recently put it back up again as a public one. Other uploads of the "Happy Nightmare Baby" video were still findable at YT, but as far as I know not this version with David, Suki, & Hope at the beginning, which is the one I want to see! Many thanks to uploader 74elcaminohef for making it available again. I downloaded 74elcaminohef's video upload, & have re-upped it here. Usually I refrain from upping recordings others have already upped to YT, but this is another exception 'cause by upping it it will help spread word it's back. It's a shame it went private & inaccessible for so long. I hope I'm helping ensure that doesn't happen again!
The original upload from 74elcaminohef can be viewed here:

with lots of viewer comments, mostly from before it went private.

On the history of Seattle's "Bombshelter Videos" TV show:
http://www.frankonline.com/BSV-Photos...
& this quote:
"Bombshelter Videos originally aired...on KSTW-TV11 every Thursday night from Nov 1987-Nov 1988 and once or twice every weekend on KTZZ-TV22 from May 1989-Sept 1994. Bombshelter Videos created a cult-like following of late night fans that credits the program's weekly broadcasts for playing a significant role in exposing them to what ultimately became known as 'Grunge' and the 'Seattle Music Scene.' Early episodes of Bombshelter Videos premiered now famous alternative rock bands like Sonic Youth, Nine Inch Nails, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. BSV even produced and aired the first Sub Pop TV commercials ever. It was for Soundgarden's "Screaming Life" EP (1987)..."

Oct. 2013 update: I maintain & update an extensive (mostly live shows) bootlegs list with download links at fan forum mazzystar.free.fr of Mazzy Star & related artists. The boots thread is found in the "General Discussion" section. The forum also has threads with interviews, band history, etc. So, check out mazzystar.free.fr
