Still very much on his way up through the pile, Bobby Champs is the next fledgling talent to be scooped up by Hypercolour for a full EP entitled 'Steve Martin'. After a bracing techno release back in August with Drag Queen, the Brighton based beatsmith spreads his wings into more eclectic fair at the same time as showcasing a keen production prowess.

Kicking off the EP is the title track with urban drums and pinging toms slapping out a funky rhythm. The loops roll on with panning synth squeals adding a sense of space to an otherwise compressed and concentrated workout.

'NYC Panther' is more hunkered over; the drums are militant, stomping through a deserted city street at night with a rubbery firmness. Heavily filtered vox lurk round each corner variously rapping, whispering and speaking in almost indecipherable words. It's a set building track punctuated with wobbly chords that sounds like little else

Finally, 'Brooklyn Bomb' is six minutes of tight, punchy, convoluted house and bass. Intricate percussive flecks speckle a howling, tortured bassline whilst vocal cries and rising melody patterns keep things from get all too involved and dense. Sweaty business for sure, but dealing in refreshingly contemporary ideals.
