Twenty Years Later: The Wallflowers' "6th Avenue Heartache" By Strangefolk - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 23, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Following last year’s successful Songs Of Their Own video series of artists covering songs by the Grateful Dead, the Twenty Years Later video series features some of JamBase’s favorite musicians recording songs released in 1996. Looking back, the music released 20 years ago proved to be critical in both rock ‘n’ roll history and particularly within the jam band scene. The year 1996 saw seminal albums released by Phish, Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, moe., The String Cheese Incident, the Disco Biscuits, Keller Williams, Galactic, Medeski Martin & Wood, God Street Wine, Strangefolk and The Slip, helping to solidify the maturing jam scene.

There were also influential records issued in 1996 by the likes of artists as diverse as Beck, Jamiroquai, Modest Mouse, Rage Against The Machine, Johnny Cash, Pearl Jam, Sting, Tool, 2Pac and many others. The Twenty Years Later video series takes a look back at those releases, with participating artists covering songs from albums turning 20 this year. For this installment, Strangefolk drew on “6th Avenue Heartache” by The Wallflowers.

propel the album to worldwide popular success. Frontman Jakob Dylan purportedly wrote the song when he was just 18 and had wanted to record it for the group’s 1992 self-titled debut, instead saving it for the 1996 follow-up. The slide guitar on the original T-Bone Burnett-produced recording was provided by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, who recorded his part at his home studio without ever meeting the band. Counting Crows’ lead singer Adam Duritz can also be heard adding background harmonies. (Head here to watch Fruition covering the Bringing Down The Horse track “One Headlight”)

Previous TYL participants, Strangefolk made the most of their visit to the JamBase offices in San Francisco, covering The Black Crowes as well as The Wallflowers. Guitarists Reid Genauer and Jon Trafton work in a portion of their original “Lines And Circles” from their 1996 debut studio album Lore during their cover performance.
