The lyric was penned in 2012, the opening line is Shakespeare’s.
But what is true of the current world differs much from Lear’s
Hence then the second line, every sturdy limb gets hobbled
The sounding not of a draining swamp but a coalition cobbled.

The Verlaines are an Indie Rock band which formed in 1981 in a student flat in Dunedin New Zealand. Their debut tracks were released on the seminal Dunedin double EP which was release d by Flying Nun Records in March 1982. Since then the band has released 9 albums and the front man Graeme Downes, while going through various incarnations of the band, has remained true to his punk roots through his career. The Church and State song is a wry take on world events and a lament that the powers that be actually gave us the religious icon Jesus, as we have been literally sold everything else. Church and State is fine example of New Zealand Songs.
