Southern Records Latitudes Series ( White Magic ep New Egypt) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 15, 2009
DESCRIPTION:
The song New Egypt was released on Southern records in 2008 for its Latitudes series.

White Magic is just this psychedelic / folk / indie rock band from Brooklyn, NY. They're not that great, I think. But Southern let them have free reign over their studio in order to really push their creative side and make some really spontaneous and creative music.

The Latitudes series that Southern records is doing is a series of limited edition releases of bands they admire. All the releases are in the spirit of spontaneity and creativity.

I'll let them explain it. Here's a link to their Latitudes page :

Some very cool artists are there, like Grails, Sir Richard Bishop, Ariels Pink, Neurosis members and tons more. Very cool by the looks of it. All beautifully packaged and limited edition.

This releases was pretty good, too. New Egypt is just a 10 minutes track of a repetitive 3 chord piano riff, driven drums, weird sound effects and maybe even some clarinets. I guess a triangle and a gong are incorporated at some point. The song slowy builds into this relentless, layered monster. Pretty fun stuff.

Fans of experimental and improvised music should definitely check this shit out.
