"Pardon me if this review is scatter-brained, because my mind has officially been blown. Portland's Sophe Lux is without question the most distinct band I've covered since handling album reviews for College News.
And yet, pondering a way to describe their act took no time at all.
Let's start with a female lead singer. Give her the attitude and wardrobe of Freddie Mercury, the voice of Kate Bush, and the depth of Tori Amos. As generous a description as that is, it perfectly depicts Sophe Lux's Gwynne Haynes.
Now imagine Queen with five members, three of which are female, including the aforementioned Haynes. Add more synthesizers while keeping Queen's rock opera storytelling approach and you have the recipe for Sophe Lux.
After their daring 2007 release Waking the Mystics, Sophe Lux follows up with their 2009 EP Hungry Ghost which hits July 14th. While only containing two tracks, it delivers an outstanding experience with over ten minutes of mind-bending music.
The titular track launches the EP in true Queen-fashion, carefully crafting a dramatic musical arc over the course of the five minute opera ending in an exorcism of America. Much like "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Hungry Ghost" is a multitude of diverse tunes blended together to form one musical epic.
"Sophia Song" takes a different approach than the track prior and softly opens with an Amos-like composition with its melodic piano base and mesmerizing vocal track. It twists through a more industrial interlude with Haynes's eerie backgrounds, completing the ambiance before tailing off into a quiet piano finish.
Haynes and Sophe Lux are either living vicariously through the past or time-traveling visitors from the future intent on instigating the newest era of rock and roll. Regardless of whichever it is, I'm just glad I've got their discs in my grubby little mitts." -COLLEGE NEWS MAGAZINE
