For The Old Men - SONS OF YORK - Video
PUBLISHED:  Nov 12, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
This previously unreleased song was recorded during the Black And White Summer (2009) sessions, but was ultimately left off the album as we felt it didn't quite fit within the track listing. It is meant as a tribute to the WW2 generation - the men and women who served the allies during the war effort. Their lives impacted the world in a way our lives never will. It is likely we won't ever be asked to muster anywhere near the amount of courage that our grand parents had to. While we are thankful for this, we can't help but feel a sense of awe and revery toward the terrible adventure they faced and the greatness that is their contribution to history.

"We won't live up, we owe this much, we sure as hell can try to."

Lyrics:

There's a whole lot of people up in Canada and I am alone
Alone as the cattle in their cage homes, far from home
Their empty eyes fly by me on the Yellowhead, they don't know where they're going
So they can't fear the slaughter-house, but I know, I know where I'm going

Now that I've made peace with the secrets that I keep
The words of wisdom I leave: sign off, log out, shut down, there's nothing on that screen

For the old men who we'll never live up to
When there was work to be done they dropped right out of high school
When there was war to be won they all took up their rifles
We won't live up, we owe this much, we sure as hell can try to

Well I say we shoot the chutes tonight, who's all with me?
We'll put in upstream at first light, I'll bring the whisky
We'll borrow old man Tucker's row boat, without asking
All the paper's gonna print our names in bold, unless you're chicken

Now as he lay dead, the Doctor looked at me and said
"Every bone in his hand broken, went down swinging, fighting to the death"

For the old men who we'll never live up to
When there was work to be done they dropped right out of high school
When there were wars to be won they all took up their rifles
We won't live up, we owe this much, we sure as hell can try to

Get up, go out, get down, sign off, log out, shut down
Speak up, ask out, make out, drink up, smoke up, but don't be late, no

For the old men who we'll never live up to
When there was work to be done they dropped right out of high school
When there were wars to be won they all took up their rifles
We won't live up, we owe this much, we sure as hell can try to

For Bobby, it's for Susie, it's for the new recruits coming fresh outta 'boot
It's for Campo in the coal mines, Jimmy on the front lines, Dorothy at home baking up a sweet cherry pie and Nurse Evans was a volunteer, they were far from home, no time for fear, we can't pretend to know what they know and we're never gonna match the stories they wrote
