DIY speakers - just tweaked the crossover - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 28, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
I just finished tweaking the crossover for the speakers I built. Increased the tweeter crossover point and added a bit more padding on it. Woofer left unchanged. I might add a bit of baffle step compensation, but for now it sounds very even and natural. The room needs a bit of treatment though which is next.

After listening to some tracks after making the changes, I found myself really enjoying an album I purchased a whild back - made by someone who is on youtube. Maja Toudal. Her music can be found majatoudal.bandcamp.com and is available as FLAC which I really like since its lossless. I think Amazon and itunes might sell it as well but I dont know if they offer FLAC and for me its all about lossless :)

If you have any questions about building speakers, feel free to ask. I'm no expert and am still learning but I can definitely offer some suggestions and direction :)

Speaker details:
-Vifa D27TG45 tweeters and Camber C8 woofers (these are both vintage items and are not available new anymore
-Crossover slopes are 18db/oct for the tweeter at approx 2.7Khz and 6db/oct at 2Khz for the woofer since its got a very smooth and gradual rolloff
-Cabinet volume is 2.8cf internal after all bracing and padding and is tuned to 34Hz. The cabinet is made from 3/4" MDF except the front is thicker at 1.5" with the area behind the woofer having been chamfered and opened up.

The overall goal was to have a simple two way speaker that didnt cost a lot and didnt require a subwoofer (ie can go down to about 30Hz without any issues). I dont listen loudly so power handling was never an issue.

Rest of the system consists of a Threshold SA3 amp, Soundcraftsmen DX4000 preamp, Squeezebox 3 player and an MSB daclink III DAC. There is a Yamaha CD player in there too but never gets used.
