Hi, I'm Dr. SaxLove, and I love playing smooth jazz saxophone. In fact, I've been playing smooth jazz saxophone my whole adult life, although when I was younger I didn't know I was playing smooth jazz. Back then, there was no such thing as smooth jazz. It was just jazz music were playing, but we were playing it in a very smooth way.

I remember playing in the basement of Mother's Bar in my hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was a very cool scene - literally jazz underground. This must have been around 1978 because Chuck Mangione's groundbreaking (in terms of smooth jazz) song, "Feels So Good" was all the rage (so much so, in fact, that is was nominated for a Record Of The Year Grammy that year).

Mangione, along with David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Bob James, and others, especially the artists recording on the CTI label, like George Benson, Deodato, and Hubert Laws, were the pioneers of smooth jazz - the music they were creating then morphed into what we hear now.

Anyway, I remember the vibe in the basement of Mother's and it was relaxed and hip, and so was the music we played: melodic, groove oriented, romantic, and smooth (and by "smooth" I mean easy to listen to, not harmonically or rhythmically challenging to the listener; jazzy, but not that kind of complicated jazz that is hard to hear unless you have a taste for it).

Originally, the music that would eventually be know as "smooth jazz" was part of the "adult alternative" radio format (1983-ish), and was heard along side "new age" music, and adult contemporary (ballad-heavy pop songs). By the late 80's, though, smooth jazz had established itself as a unique style who's popularity increased steadily through the 90's.

Here are some great examples of the songs that pioneered the way into the style that we know as "Smooth Jazz":

Feels So Good - Chuck Mangione
Just The Two Of Us - Bill Withers and Grover Washington
Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001) - Deodato
Songbird - Kenny G
Winelight - Grover Washington
Breezin' - George Benson
Lily Was Here - Candy Dulfer
Mister Magic - Grover Washington
Street Life - Randy Crawford and The Crusaders
Shaker Dance - Spyro Gyra
Angela (Theme from TV show "Taxi") - Bob James

There are many more, of course, but if you want to get a feeling for what was happening musically as smooth jazz was being formed, those songs will give you a good start.

So I've been playing this kind of music my whole adult life, which is saying a lot when you consider the fact that I've been playing the saxophone now for 53 years (I started when I was 9 years old, in elementary school).

And for some reason, I was born with - blessed with, a talent - a gift, for communicating loving energy through music and the saxophone. I've always been able to channel uplifting, romantic, relaxing, and mellow music - music that heals, in it's own way.

That, of course, is the essence of what I do here on the Dr. SaxLove YouTube Channel: I'm communicating music that helps calm and uplift the listener, music that makes you feel better than you did before you listened to it, music that helps you relax, that brings your heart rate down, that releases beneficial chemicals into your bloodstream. Music that heals, in other words.

The smooth jazz music on this video is music that I composed (or, as I like to think of it, channeled) and is comprised of two songs, "Summer Dream", and "Sweetness".

I composed these songs with this video in mind, and so even though there are only two songs in this 10 hour video, those songs are so soft, mellow, and chill, they become, as you listen, hypnotically relaxing.

Enjoy!
