SLAVE CALLED SHIVER

"People take a look at me and expect me to sing Summertime,” laments Alicia Bankhofer singer of the Austrian alt rock band Slave called shiver. “Then they look bewildered when I tell them I sing and write rock, and their eyebrows raise when I begin to belt out one of our songs.” Expectations successfully debunked and surpassed.



Their story began in 2006. After guitarist Philipp Rechthaler promised the Trinidadian-born black songstress that she would never have to sing Summertime again, the band has been creating haunting but self-assured alt rock layered with astute guitar riffs, intense percussion and pulsating bass lines. The years it took to develop their abrasive yet melodic sound have been well spent. The meticulous musicians deliver an explosion of supercharged cerebral rock that display manic passion and unabashed energy.



That’s not to say the journey was without hiccups. Creative differences and power struggles repeatedly plagued the foursome and hampered any real progress. After playing 3 gigs in Holland they abruptly found themselves sans drummer and bassist. But they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. After several fruitless reboots they brainstormed and decided on a new approach: a core band with changing partners.



“Sometimes I worry that my songwriting skills will dry up and abandon me as quickly as they came, forcing the journey to end,” says Alicia, “and then a ballad like “Great Escape” comes along and it’s profound power surprises the hell out of me.” Luckily Alicia’s fears have not yet come to pass.



The CD "SUPERLATERAL" packs this and other gems into a package that is one part exhibitionist angst, one part guilty indulgence. A must for the discerning rock fan.
