DESCRIPTION:
Een stikdonkere zaal, een ratelende 35 mm filmprojector en een live cinema orkest van acht cello's: Cello8ctet Amsterdam presenteert SILENT CINEMA, een Russisch Zwijgende Filmprogramma, en transformeert daarin tot een waar cinema orkest, met alle klankkleuren en effecten die de films van de jaren 1900-1930 tot leven brachten. Charlie Chaplin, die behalve een geniaal acteur ook filmmuziekcomponist was en cello speelde, inspireerde de cellisten van het octet daartoe.

De hoofdfilm, De Mantel, is een film "in de stijl van Nikolai Gogol", zoals de regisseurs Kozintsev en Trauberg het omschrijven: een prachtige, surrealistische film die zich afspeelt in Sint Petersburg. Akaky Akakievich is een kopiïst in overheidsdienst. Als zijn mantel tot op de draad versleten is, bestelt hij een nieuwe. Hij raakt steeds meer geobsedeerd door de nieuwe mantel, de mantel neemt zijn hele leven in beslag. Dan, eindelijk, is de mantel af! Altijd is Akaky Akakievitch een kleurloze ambtenaar geweest, maar zodra hij zijn nieuwe mantel draagt, krijgt hij ineens groot respect van zijn collega's, hij is iemand.

Maar dan wordt zijn nieuwe, dure mantel gestolen...

A pitch dark theatre, a rattling 25 mm movie projector and a live cinema orchestra consisting of 8 cello's: Cello8ctet Amsterdam presents SILENT CINEMA, a russian silent film programme, where in the ensemble transforms itself in to a true cinema orchestra, with all the timbres and effects that brought the movies in the early 20th century to life. Charlie Chaplin formed the inspiration for this project, being a brilliant actor as well as a film music composer and amateur cellist.

The feature film, the overcoat, is a movie "in the style of Nikolai Gogol" as described by directors Kozintsev and Trauberg. A beautiful, surrealistic movie set in Saint Petersburg. Akaky Akakievich a copyist working for the civil service. When his overcoat is completely worn out he orders a new one. He becomes obsessed by the new overcoat, it takes over his life. Then, finally, the coat is finished! Akaky Akakievitch always was a wishy washy civil servant, but wearing his new overcoat he becomes someone who earns great respect from his colleagues. All of a sudden he is important.

But then his new overcoat gets stolen..
