Like jazz, blues and country music also surmounted America's frontiers and gave themselves to the world. Madeleine Peyroux has always had affection for Americana and its repertoire, and Secular Hymns, her forthcoming album due for impulse! release next September 16, is no exception to that. The names convened by Madeleine include not only Willie Dixon, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Stephen Foster (a little-known 19th century musician yet probably the first great songwriter the USA has produced), but also Allen Toussaint, Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt, all of them spiritually present with the singer in the intimacy of her voice/guitar/bass trio. With Secular Hymns, impulse! reaches out to the claim that, today like yesterday, Jazz is cool!
