Traditional Chinese instruments meet hip-hop and electronica
The Shanghai Restoration Project (TSRP) draws its creative inspiration from the old 1930s Shanghai jazz bands, an early combination of East and West that's become an international legend. Produced by Chinese-American Dave Liang, TSRP revives this exotic blend by introducing Eastern instruments and rhythms to the Western sounds of hip-hop and electronica.
TSRP debuted as MSN Music's "New Artist of the Week" in early 2006 and became the #1 electronic album on the site during the month of January. Since then his projects have reached #1 on several electronic charts around the world. In 2007, TSRP partnered with China Records (the Chinese government's record label) to produce Remixed and Restored Vol. 1, a project remixing select classic Chinese hits from 1930s Shanghai.
TSRP songs have been used in numerous television shows, films, and commercials around the world. Select placements include: advertisements for LVMH/Kenzo Parfums (Europe), Dove (US), and TIM mobile (Brazil), a Christian Dior runway show, NBC and BBC broadcast coverage of the Beijing Olympics, Showtime’s “The L Word,” and promotional campaigns for Microsoft, SanDisk, Hilton Hotels, and Coca-Cola.
Producer Dave Liang was born in Lawrence, Kansas and attended high school in upstate New York, where he was selected as the pianist for the NY All-State Jazz Ensemble. He attended college at Harvard University where he majored in Applied Mathematics and Economics. He has been interviewed by The New York Times, NPR's All Things Considered, BBC World Service, FADER Magazine, Wired.com, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Wall Street Journal. He has worked with artists on Bad Boy, Nettwerk, Yamaha, Warner, and Universal.
