O Gracious Light (Phos Hilaron) by Sean Dayton - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 25, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
I've been really inspired lately reading some older prayers. Phos Hilaron is one of the oldest known Christian hymns / prayers being used today (written in the 3rd or 4th century). I decided to try a new melody using the same prayer -- word for word (which presented its own challenges -- in a good way!). Musically, I tried to merge the ancient with the modern (old and new). The original song was meant to be sung at the lighting of lamps in the evening and is sometimes known as the 'Lamp-lighting Hymn' (thanks Wikipedia).Hope you enjoy!

* Lyrics from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer:

O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.
