Using an Overdrive Pedal in front of an amp for modern metal tones! (Airis Effects ProtoDrive demo) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 04, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
Do you need an overdrive in front of your amp in order to get a modern metal sound?

What tonal variations can you get from an overdrive?

I don’t think most people realize that many modern metal guitarists gets their tone from not only a great amp but also a great overdrive pedal. With a great overdrive pushing the amp you can take a relatively “muddy ” or “loose” amp and get a LOT of additional tightness, crunch and clarity. Many people will even get the MAJORITY of their signature sound from a pedal. Of course, the pedal itself is of utmost importance. A standard Boss DS-1 likely won’t get you close to the tight, aggressive sound you might be after but a pedal such as a Ibanez TS808, which is ubiquitous in metal, will get you much further along. These days, companies such as Airis Effects have taken that classic pedal to the next level. You can get a huge variety of sounds out of what seems like a simple pedal, and as you will hear in this demo, you can even get tones that drastically improve an already great amp.

In this demo, I will take you through a live reamp session (real time tweaking) with the Airis Effects ProtoDrive in front of Diezel Herbert channel 3 patch (Fractal Audio Axe-FX2) as well as show you how things translate in a mix. Enjoy!
