This school year (2010-2011), students enrolled in the Bright Star Instrument 1 Piano/Keyboard Class studied the music of George Gershwin. Gershwin is credited for creating one of the first music Hybrids by combining elements of Jazz with Classical music. The highlight of the unit was the chance to see and hear Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris" performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

To wrap up the unit, students applied their freshly developed keyboard skills, as well as other instrumentation and voices, to create their own music hybrids. Students worked solo or in small groups to either create new music using characteristics of the styles and genres they wished to combine or created and played Mash-Up variations of songs already composed from all genres of music.

After brainstorming, composing, rehearsing and editing their hybrids, each group recorded their pieces in our music room using the GarageBand software. All of the tracks feature live playing as well as loops, samples and effects supplied by the software. And now, I am pleased to introduce the Bright Star Hybrid Music Project (BSHMP).
