To attempt to write about David Rybka's music is to attempt to write about David Rybka the man; so we may as well lay that on the line and move forward.
David Rybka is one of the most self-destructive people I know and has an aching core at his heart.
All of this is verifiably true, but all of it also emerges from one specific point, that Rybka is aware and honest to the point of self-harm. It has often been said that real artists suffer because they see pain everywhere. This is actually not true of many "artists." It is true of Rybka. But as with with the rest of us, there are things that, on the good days, give us solace, even on occasion promise some kind of rescue from the abyss.
Music is one of these things.
For Rybka, music is not escape, or entertainment, it is a thing which is simply essential, and visceral. That connects with everything that is difficult, and flawed, and broken. This is not all of Rybka's music, but it will be.
I can't see much of the future, but I reckon I can see that.
