How to play Major Scales all over the Bass Fretboard - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 05, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
How to learn the major scale all over the fretboard of the bass. There are 5 different positions on the neck containing every possible note from the major scale in each position. Pause the video on each position diagram if you need time to learn.

After memorizing these 5 positions, now given any key, I see the entire fret board pattern without a problem. This also helps me to see the entire pattern for any mode.

So, first is the video for the major scale. Once you learn the patterns, try to meld together 2 positions, then 3, then more. Try to play 2 octave scales going up and down different ways each time. This should be easy to do now that you know where the notes are in every position. Try to play in every key. Try to play a walking bass line in a mode. I suggest Miles Davis's "So What" in D Dorian. Now that you can see all the notes on the neck, you should have more freedom to move around. Try soloing. The hardest part, try to make it sound musical!

Position 1 contains notes from the Ionian and Locrian scales. Position 2 contains the Dorian scale. Position 3 contains the Phrygian and Lydian scales. Position 4 contains the Mixolydian. Position 5 contains the Aeolian.
