Lyrics:

This is a story about an ill fated man and all hes got
a pair of good shoes and dirty socks.
Never known where he was going
Or even where he came from

Ive never been on top or even near it
Always on the bottom if you can believe it
One day i just sat down after giving up and i bled
Right here on these streets

i felt a hand on my shoulder
looked up and was blinded by the sun
then a woman stepped into my view
she didnt even have a smile

she had long jet black hair
she had cold sapphire eyes
she had the reddest ruby lips
which opened up and said

it doesnt have to be this hard
you're a man who has come this far
so pick up your self
and follow me this time
because it doesnt have to be this hard

so i put on my shoes and followed
she led me down to the corner of the street
never once looked back to make sure
that i was still around

she fed me from the warmest bakery in town
i ate until it hurt my stomach
i drank a tall class of cold cream
got up and followed her out

she took me to a store id never seen on the street before
was tall and thin, just like me
they must have had everything
that a gentleman could ever want

this woman spoke to the clerk real softly
seemed like it took no time at all
he rushed to me with a new suit
fitted me perfectly and he said

it doesn't have to be this hard
you're a man who has come this far
your dressed for the part
you've got a brand new start
it doesn't have to be this hard

i put my hands into the pockets
the silk brushing against back of my hand
a roll of money found its way in my palm
money that had never been spent by a man before

she sent me to a barber right next door
gave me my first clean shave and second hair cut
i couldnt recognize myself in the mirror
the woman told me i was late

she sat me down in her convertible
beautiful old red corvette, color red
she drove 100 miles an hour
perfect weather out there

pulled up to a house as big as ive seen
opened my door and i followed her in
i was greeted by guests both old and young
who looked at me and said

it doesnt have to be this hard
you're a man who has come this far
so take a drink
and tell me your dreams
because it doesn't have to be this hard

we drank the finest champagne man makes
ate the finest food man prepares
smoked the finest cigar man rolls
and laughed as loud as we can

a bit of a party with all these guests
the happiest group of people i ever did met
and probably the nicest too
as they all offered to help

i was led by three beautiful woman at that point
up to one of the many rooms
they took my shoes and socks and suit off
and laid me down in a bath

the women washed me, id never been washed before
laid me down gently and closed my eyes
these woman softly sang the whole time
this is what they sang

it doesn't have to be this hard
you're a man who has come this far
rest your tired eyes
in the dim moonlight
it doesn't have to be this hard

i woke up and it was cold
seems someone probably left a window open
dark though, i couldnt make out the room
so i got up and looked around

i was sore, sore from the games we played
but sore from something else too
as my eyes adjusted to the darkness
i couldnt recognize a thing

the room i was in was worn, not ornate
the house had been completely abandoned
there were no doors and no windows
nobody was there, not even the woman

my suit was gone, my face was rough
my feet hurt, my good shoes were missing
looking at my dirty socks i realized
that i had just met the devil herself

but i thought

it doesnt have to be this hard
you're a man who has come this far
dust yourself off
and help yourself out
it doesnt have to be this hard
