DESCRIPTION:
Bassist, composer, educator, and NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter is one of the most important music icons of the generation. At age 75, Mr. Carter as played on well over 2,000 jazz, soul, pop, and classical recordings spanning some 55 years. Throughout his career he's backed some of the most important artists including: Aretha Franklin, Little Jimmy Scott, B.B. King, Roberta Flack, Gil Scott-Heron, James Brown, Wes Montgomery, Lena Horne, Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Art Farmer, Eric Dolphy, Gil Evans, and the Kronos Quartet.

Currently Ron is a professor of music at The Juilliard School in New York City, a position he's held for the last 4 years. Last year the school began a scholarship in his name for a deserving student who wants to study music at the famed music institution. This year the school decided to hold and host "Ron Carter at 75: A Life in Music," a program commemorating his musical career as well as have all the proceeds go to the scholarship. This year's program was hosted by actor Danny Glover and featured performances and special appearances by Herbie Hancock, Benny Golson, Hubert Laws, Jim Hall, Christian McBride, Buster Williams, Lewis Nash, Carl Allen, Russell Malone, and Mulgrew Miller.

Ron also has a big band project thats doing well on jazz radio charts titled "Ron Carter's Great Big Band" on the Sunnyside Records label. Also continued to tour and record with his Stryker Trio featuring Mulgrew Miller on piano and Russell Malone on guitar. His autobiography "Finding the Right Notes" chronicles his life from his days attending the Eastman School of Music, to him moving to New York City and becoming a well-demand session musician, his run with the Miles Davis Quintet, to him leading his own groups.
