Rex Riddem is a producer, DJ and percussionist. He is also Chief Indian of the Riddem Nation Tribe. As producer and DJ for the band Nappy Riddem, he is known for his ability to traverse location and time through his eclectic tastes in music. Born and raised in Washington, DC, where Presidents raise their kids, yet residents have no representation, Rex got his start in the local scene. His mix of reggae, soul, and Latin funk mash-ups combined with electronic, and hip hop flavors has earned him the respect and adoration of DJs and fans throughout the globe. From Brazil to Russia, Portugal, Hawaii, St. John, Mexico, and across the continental U.S. including Las Vegas where he held an eight month residency at Mandalay Bay.
Three decades in the making, Rex Riddem's career is well storied and accomplished. His debut single "Salvador Diaspora" was licensed to several compilations, including the internationally acclaimed Brazilectro 7 (Audiopharm). Nappy Riddem, Rex's partnership with Mustafa Akbar (Fort Knox Five, Thunderball) and Ashish Vyas (Thievery Corporation, Gogogo Airheart) was recently nominated for a Washington Area Music Association award as 2010 best performance artist in electronica. Nappy Riddem played several sold out shows in 2010, headlining Night Fever's Wax Poetics party in Austin, TX at the Scoot Inn and supporting Bassnectar at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. Nappy Riddem closed out 2010 performing at U Street Music Hall in support of the Empresarios CD release party. Nappy Riddem also made a big splash at SXSW 2011 with several showcase events.
As a percussionist, Rex Riddem has recorded with Afrika Bambaataa, Thunderball, Fort Knox Five, Holmes Ives, and Randall Jones. During the winter of 2011 he toured with the Thunderball Soundsystem in support of the Pretty Lights. Rex Riddem recently finished recording and producing Nappy Riddem's debut album. Due to be released October 2011 on Fort Knox Recordings. Given an advance promo of some tume, Steve Aoki called Nappy Riddem "groovy and awesome." Nappy Riddem has received regular airplay on Seattle's KEXP Radio and Tilos Radio in Budapest, Hungary. Before heading out on an extensive coast to coast US summer tour, Rex is producing Emmanual Kembe's album, an exciting project by this world famous South Sudanese ex-pat.
