DESCRIPTION:
Popular was an obscure (make that extremely obscure) budget label that had some connection to Tops. Back in the 50's there were dozens of record labels that specialized in releasing these extended play 78's and 45's, that contained nothing more then shortened cover versions of then current top-40 hits. This video contains the first side of a two record set issued by a cover (knock off) record label.
On a more technical note; this record is made of shallac, yet is inscribed with microgroove-like grooves. The copy featured here has been digitally restored so that all pops and clicks were removed without harming the fidelity of the recording (more on my transfer process later). The copy is was found worn, as a previous owners neglected to play the record with a microgroove stylus, a fact that could have been easily unknown to them, as it is a 78 rpm record. Even though I played this record with a magnetic cartridge at 45 rpm, thus decreasing the likelihood of jumps in the capturing process of the transfer, some jumps occurred on some tracks. The first side presented here does not suffer from any needle jumps cause by a damaged groove.

My digital restoration of these tracks used Denoise LF, Click Repair, and Denoise transfer software to clean crackle and excessive surface noise. I took care to only apply as much noise reductions necessary, in order to place the surface noise just behind the music. This is how professional audio restorationists (at least the competent ones do at least). I wouldn't call myself a pro at restoring audio from phonograph records (I only have low end equipment to work with after all), however my quality of work has improved noticeably.
