The Winterreise Project - 10. Rast (Rest). Trudy David & Rachael Wadham - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jan 18, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Schubert wrote the majority of his songs for amateur musicians, and yet they are performed almost exclusively by professionals today. The Winterreise Project reunites Schubert's songs with amateur performers similar to those who purchased Schubert's scores and sung his music during his lifetime.

The Winterreise Project is an experimental performance project for amateur musicians that took place in Victoria, Canada in Spring, 2015. A group of 27 amateur adult pianists and singer received professional-level training on weekends and evenings over a two-month period and presented a joint performance of Schubert's song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey) at the end of the course.

Performers, Song 10: Trudy David (singer) is High School and College Teacher (retired) and Property Owner/Manager. Rachael Wadham (pianist) is a part-time piano teacher and full-time mother.

Translation:

10. Rast

Nun merk ich erst, wie müd ich bin,
Da ich zur Ruh mich lege:
Das Wandern hielt mich munter hin
Auf unwirtbarem Wege.

Die Füße frugen nicht nach Rast,
Es war zu kalt zum Stehen;
Der Rücken fühlte keine Last,
Der Sturm half fort mich wehen.

In eines Köhlers engem Haus
Hab Obdach ich gefunden;
Doch meine Glieder ruhn nicht aus:
So brennen ihre Wunden.

Auch du, mein Herz, in Kampf und Sturm
So wild und so verwegen,
Fühlst in der Still erst deinen Wurm
Mit heißem Stich sich regen!

10. Rest

I only notice my weariness,
Now I lie down to rest;
Wandering lifted my spirits
On the inhospitable road.

My feet demand no rest,
It was too cold to stop;
My back felt no burden,
The storm propelled me along.

In a coal-burner's narrow hut
I found shelter;
Still, my limbs cannot rest:
Their wounds burn so.

You too, my heart, in battle and storm
So wild and so bold,
Only now in the silence do you feel
Your stirring serpent’s hot sting!
