Columbia 14634-D - 11-20-1931 - Need A Little Sugar In My Bowl Written by (Clarence Williams / D. Small / Tim Brymn) First release of this song was by Bessie Smith (1931).

Expressing desire for the man she is with, Bessie Smith decides to interpolate the timeless phrase, “give me some sugar.” Originally a literal request, over time morphed from asking for something sweet in general, to the sweetness of a kiss, all the way to the sweetness of making love. Whether in poetry or song, it was a way to express that feeling without being to crass or having plausible deniability. The appeal is strengthened with a solicitation to help her relieve her funny and sad feelings; who could say no to that.
Double entendre songs have been around since music began, but rarely does the artist “give up the ghost” so boldly as Smith does towards the end. She tosses aside the barely subtle “sugar request” for the blatantly obvious metaphors asking to forego the digital and oral stimulation, for something more filling.
Bessie Smith (April 15, 1894 -- September 26, 1937) was an American blues singer.
Sometimes referred to as The Empress of the Blues, Smith was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. She is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era and, along with Louis Armstrong, a major influence on subsequent jazz vocalists.

Lyrics:
Tired of bein' lonely, tired of bein' blue
I wished I had some good man, to tell my troubles to
Seem like the whole world's wrong
Since my man's been gone

I need a little sugar in my bowl
I need a little hot dog on my roll
I can stand a bit of lovin', oh so bad
I feel so funny, I feel so sad

I need a little steam-heat on my floor
Maybe I can fix things up, so they'll go
What's the matter hard papa
Come on and save your mama's soul
'Cause I need a little sugar, in my bowl, doggone it
I need a some sugar in my bowl

I need a little sugar in my bowl
I need a little hot dog between my rolls
You gettin' different, I've been told
Move your finger, drop something in my bowl

I need a little steam-heat on my floor
Maybe I can fix things up, so they'll go
Get off your knees, I can't see what you're drivin' at
It's dark down there looks like a snake!
C'mon here and drop somethin' here in my bowl
Stop your foolin' and drop somethin' in my bowl
