Johnnie Pate was more of a background figure then a leading hit artist, especially later as arranger and producer in the R&B and Soul scene. In his early career he released several jazz records and played with many leading artists in the field. He worked for and with several of the independent labels like Chess, Federal and Okeh.
'Muskeeta' was released after the Champs' hit 'Tequila' and therefore probably recorded after as well to cash in on the Mexican vibes of the smash hit.
