Notes about program:

Russian composer Nikolai Medtner composed in a time when music evolved in radically new directions, but unlike many of his contemporaries, he sought to conserve permanence and beauty in art, finding his own way forward without rejecting the achievements of the past. The Eastman School of Music presents pianist Cahill Smith and friends in an all-Medtner program of solo piano, vocal, and chamber music. With the exception of a recital featuring his vocal music in 1969, this concert is the first program at Carnegie Hall to survey Medtner's works since the composer's own performance in 1930.
