In an age of USB sticks and organised playlists, the amount of work that goes into a live set seems overly complicated. Since you're playing with just your own sounds, your scope is limited compared to a DJ. What's more, the elements of the tracks are divided between different pieces of gear, requiring a degree of preparation that would make many DJs balk. Then there's the practicalities of travelling to other countries with cases of expensive, fragile equipment. And once you're on stage, so much more can go wrong.

Truss and Tessela, however, make the effort pay off. As Overmono, their live sets walk a fine line between hardware and software, structure and improvisation. They started playing live together just last year and have been steadily refining their approach ever since, particularly with post-show debriefs over tea. Translating their visceral productions into a coherent live show is no mean feat, so we followed them from their London studio to Sonar Festival in Barcelona, getting a sense of the journey from rehearsal to soundcheck to performance.
