A gentleman whose chart run started with “The Diary” in 1958. “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” was Neil’s first #1; striking that position in the summer of 1962.
It has been covered a number of times, notably by the Happenings in 1967, Lenny Welch in 1969, the Partridge Family in 1972 and then by Neil again in 1975. His second version was much slower but still charted at a respectable #8.
Neil was also a great songwriter, with many of his songs co-written with Howard Greenfield. The pair wrote hits for Connie Francis, the Captain & Tennille and many others.
