(European) Harmonium vs. (American) Reed Organ (M. G. Fischer - Risoluto) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 07, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
This is not a competition but a comparison! It is a comparison between a typical pressure type (J. & P. Schiedmayer, approx. 1860) and a suction type instrument (Packard Style 485p, 1897), different in the internal air flow and resulting sound colors. The air flow for sounding the free reeds (metal tongues) is generated either by pressure or vacuum. With pressure the tone sounds sharper with more attack while the suction type lets pass less overtones and sounds softer. I like both systems. High quality for both systems is a must, unfortunately there were produced millions of "parlor, pump and whatever organs" of poor make discrediting the high class instruments.

The short prelude I play is called "Risoluto" by the German composer Michael Gotthard Fischer (1773 - 1829).
