Pharmacy EP Review from Drop-D Ezine
Author: Paul Mc Connell
The generic confines that run rampant throughout the music industry as a whole often leave the listener with a sour note in the ear. Such is the result with certain indie bands being dubbed "shoegazing". The term was first attached to bands such as The Verve, My Bloody Valentine and Ride, but more recently Doves and Engineers have fallen under this moniker in many a rock publication. Although this serves in part, to describe the grandiose bleeding of emotion onto our airwaves, it somehow leaves this writer coming up short with regards a solid understanding of the music in question. The pounding rhythm of "Bittersweet Symphony" is anything but relaxed, Rides "Leave Them All Behind" should be prescribed to anyone that ever felt they needed to move on, and with arrival of their last LP, Doves are no longer the quiet lads we traversed the first two albums with. "Stagegazing" might be more appropriate.
Such is the case with Dublin band Pharmacy. Utilising a three piece set-up without a drummer, Anthony Slevin "vocals" Steven Mc Court "guitars and programming" and Mark O" Halloran "bass and acoustic guitars" the band have crafted a purely emotional sound that lies somewhere between the psychedelic tweaks of John Squires guitar and early Doves humane lyricism. The four track EP put together earlier this year serves as a clear indication of the bands ethos: play it soft but mean it loud.
The first thing to hit home upon listening to these tracks is the resounding feeling that every ounce of the trio"s emotion is laid bare for all to see. Maybe this is where the "shoegazing" title originates from, in a need to explicate the fundamental introspection that comes along with this strain of indie music. On opener, "Crash to Earth" Slevin moves from a feeling of sorrowful regret to overwhelming joy during the chorus with little or no visible transition, the lyrics bleeding from line to line with innovative competence. The guitar break that comes two thirds of the way through makes the ear twinge with memories of The Stone Roses at their psychedelic prime.
Follow up tracks "Tears" and "While You"re Sleeping" tend towards a more acoustic and laid back feel, with rhythm taking precedence over percussion. Failing a proper descriptive, "Tears" is reminiscent of early Crowded House or the more acoustic output of Pearl Jam, at a stretch" with shades of more up-to-date outfits like 8 Ball or David Kitt in the emotive vocal stylings. You see the trend: heartfelt but brimming with vigour, something to soundtrack the good and bad times in equal measures.
The closing track "The Comet Song" brings the bands many attributes together in one 5 minute surge of ambience. Combining carefully picked guitar chords, atmospheric synths and sampling with a slow "burning rhythm", the song builds so a bittersweet climax. When Slevin sings "Its make believe/ Like happy endings/ Nothing lasts forever anymore"" the source of this bands potential becomes crystal clear: they play it like they actually mean it.
Currently recording their debut album" Pharmacy almost certainly have the ability to create something very special indeed. Keep your ears peeled for that comet, coming soon to an airwave near you.
