Phar-City :: The Talk of CT
The East Coast is longing for a liberator. It takes a fresh, serious desire to fulfill the thrown. A hungry kind, the kind that move and shake in a highly aggressive industry, this new wave of talent notably lies in the heart of New England; Phar-City, Connecticut. Hailing from a place that is not renowned for breeding the prominent in rap, Phar-City, a group of four artists, collectively display through lyrical ability and determination that its not where you’re from that determines where you will go, its what you possess.
Possessing the ability to delivery a diverse style of music is what forces Phar-City to exist in a class alone. Their music is a reflection of their lives, the experiences that have shaped them. The group has a thorough understanding of the importance of balancing street credibility and engaging the masses. “We know how to make good songs. We can appeal to the streets and still make radio friendly music. The knowledge we have of how the game works, sets us apart from other rappers,” states Beatdown, who in fact is the producer of the group.
For five years, Phar-City has laced the underground scene with performances, guest features, promotional shows and mixtapes. The name Phar-City is more than a catch; it’s a characterization of the future of Hip Hop. The group consists of four Connecticut born soldiers. Beatdown and Crisis are from Middletown, Sho-Off from New Haven and Pro from Hartford. The distance between these towns is what created the group’s name, but it’s the movement they created that unites each city.
Saturating the mixtape game has proven to be a dealing that can either make or contribute nothing at all to an artists’ career. However, mixtapes have brought success to Phar-City. Their first mixtape The Next Big Thing featured acclaimed Hip Hop DJ’s DJ Big Mike and DJ Kay Slay, mixtape kings, Grafh, Stimuli, Stat Quo and G-Unit’s Mobb Deep. Their debut mixtape sold $15,000 units in the streets. Following the success of the first mixtape, a sophomore slump was not a choice. Talk of CT, Phar-City’s second mixtape sold $20,000 units underground. Hosted by DJ Kay Slay, the mixtape spawned features from, Styles P, Slim Thug, Alchemist, Memphis Bleek among others. “The mixtape grind is cool,” states Beatdown, “but you have to do more than mixtapes to get your name out there.”
Phar-City is well equipped with a street team, a customized promotional Phar-City van, and a dozen more promotional items such as wristbands and matches. Self promotion has been vital for their movement and has helped cultivate their following. From the malls, movie theatres to clubs, “The Talk of CT,” has been solely about this unique group. Having toured all of New England, New York, Philadelphia, and North Carolina, Miami, VA, Phar-City plans to rap their way to the masses.
