Finzi: 'To Joy' | Marianne Lihannah (Mezzo Soprano) | Pete Rosser (Piano) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 16, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
This is a video clip from the mezzo soprano Marianne Lihannah's ATCL diploma concert in singing from Trinity College London. She is accompanied by the pianist Pete Rosser.
This song comes from the period of Finzi's life where he set to music any poem containing his wife's name 'Joy'.

However, 'To Joy' is a sad and moving story of the poet Edmund Blunden's baby - also called 'Joy' - who was lost to death.

This magnificent song - which meant a lot to Finzi - evokes a wintry landscape of the soul.
“I like music to grow out of the actual words and not be fitted to them” – Finzi wrote to his friend Edmund Blunden.

Many thanks to Josephine Finzi for sending me the wonderful signed photo of Finzi, so that I could use it for this video.

Hope you enjoy listening!

All the best
Marianne Lihannah
