Notes from the artist:
"Being a noise musician and performance artist, I constantly find myself surrounded by other white male artists at shows. I predict that this phenomenon stems from a particular use of extreme imagery in contemporary experimental and avant garde works of art. In Theatre of the Oppressed, Boal emphasizes the use of oppressive imagery that can be critiqued and eventually transformed through the performance or rehearsal process. Contemporary experimental and avant garde works, on the other hand, often fail to provide any sort of critique of these images or the themes behind them, much less transform those images in a meaningful or liberating way. The Crusader questions this relationship, wondering if the lack of critique or transformation (and the highly homogeneous culture that celebrates these art forms) comes from a place of privilege, since critique and transformation of problematic, offensive, and highly vulgar imagery seems far less valuable to these groups."
