Persephone Biography

Persephone is no damsel in distress. "I don't portray the typical calm and collected naïve and completely miserable girl cliché," are the lyrics she defies us with. An emerging talent, Persephone is bringing a new voice, drenched in the angst of life, to the world. Her uncompromised grit, dedication, and fervor are laid bare for all to see. The 22 year-old Miami native is all about being a strong female singer in an industry dominated by men and assembly-line female singers. "That's the trap - be cute, sing sappy love songs like everyone expects you to and get lost in the crowd. Screw that! I'm not afraid to be sarcastic, or sexual, or a bitch. I am who I am and there is nothing wrong with that!"

A determined performer at a very early age, Persephone says she has a "strange attraction" to music. "I don't know why, but since I was like 5 years old, singing in my grandma's living room, I knew I had to be a singer. There was never even a choice in my mind. In high school, when counselors wanted me to decide on a 'real career,' it made me sick to think about having some 9 to 5 ordinary life. Maybe I was some famous singer in a past life, who knows. But something deep inside me has always known that music would be the only thing that made my life worthwhile."

Persephone blends a classic sexiness with the decay of urban society and the breakdown of traditional gender roles. "I'm real! And so is my music. I'm not one of these girls who claims to have it all figured out, who are always happy with themselves and their lives. That's not me and that's not real life. Some days you just want to scream. Some days you hate yourself and the world around you. Do you get over it? Sure. But you don't want to listen to some chick singing about how wonderful life is. The truth is, we all have days when we feel insecure, ugly, unloved and I'm not afraid to let people know that I feel that way."

For the past 12 years, since the first time Persephone stepped foot on a stage, she has been dreaming of the day when she could share her talents and wisdom with the world. "I want to make a make a difference. I want people to listen to my music and say 'YES! That's how I feel!' But most of all I want to make a statement, especially to girls my age. I want them to know that imperfection is perfect, mistakes teach you about everything around you, including yourself, and those feelings no one likes to admit having are normal. Take everything with a grain of salt. And for the people who make your life harder than it has to be well, write a song about them.

Undoubtedly, with her 2006 self-titled debut EP, Persephone is getting her message across loud and clear. Packed with raw energy and dark obsessions, it is a must to any devotee of rock music. Mixing her industrial glam style with commanding lyrics and contagious, radio-friendly pop melodies, Persephone rallies a cult of in-your-face girl rockers that reject "sugar-coated lollipops and sunshine music" and ache for their darker passions. Persephone's resonant voice will command your attention from the first moment you step into her world. The emotive piano and string work by Doug Emery (Kelly Clarkson, Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Clay Aiken), vibrant drums courtesy of Lee Levin (Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias) and powerful guitar solos by the talented Dan Warner (Pink, Shakira, Nelly Furtado, Teddy Geiger, Ziggy Marley) will leave you wanting more.

"Making this CD has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. It's been demanding, but I'm always up for a challenge. I got a chance to do a lot of things that I had never done before - it's all a very personal experience. I faced the ghosts of having been cheated on in "Mistake", took on the players in my life in "Did You Think," celebrated my own power in "Girl Cliché," and reflected on growing up in a complex generation in "No Innocence." "I can't wait to see what's around the bend. I watch performances in stadiums with hundreds of thousands of people and it gives me chills. What a feeling it must be." Persephone may be closer to her dream than she realizes. The unveiling of her debut EP will hit eager audiences by storm in an East coast tour set for the summer of 2007. With a rapidly growing fan base, there will certainly be more touring in Persephone's future.

Persephone's sweat and blood is the ink that binds her solid lyrics to the page. "It's rock-n-roll from an different point of view. When I write, I try to cut through the crap of 'it's a guy thing, it's a girl thing' and get to what's real: raw human emotion." Her do-it-my-way style is the only thing she knows; "I was always a rebellious kiddoing anything my mom told me not to. Music is another rebellion for me, an outlet for everything bottled up inside." When this bottle breaks watch out for the shrapnel!
