DESCRIPTION:
A tour around Gzira, Malta, complimented by Treasure Waltz Op. 418 by Johann Strauss II. Most photos are by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech or as noted.

Schatz-Walzer (Treasure Waltz) op. 418 is a waltz by Johann Strauss II composed in 1885. The melodies from this waltz was drawn from Strauss' operetta Der Zigeunerbaron which premiered to critical acclaim on 24 October 1885.
Strauss' Der Zigeunerbaron, a Hungarian-influenced work, remained his next best-remembered operetta after Die Fledermaus,

The work begins in C major, in a march-like tune (Du kannst der Zigeuner ganz vertrau'n) before the So voll Fröhlichkeit first waltz section melodies enter. The 2nd waltz section 1st part is the trio (Ha, seht es winkt, es blinkt, es klingt) followed by the 2nd part (Nun will ich des Lebens mich freuen) in G major.

The tranquil 3rd waltz section follows (Nur keusch und rein) and the dramatically romantic 2nd part ensues (Ja, das Alles auf Ehr) in E flat major. A peaceful 4th waltz section in C is next (Doch, mehr als Gold und Geld) before the climax with cymbals in G (Das war' kein rechter Schiffersknecht), and punctuated throughout with trombones and French horns.

GZIRA
Gżira is a town in the north-eastern coast of Malta between Msida & Sliema, and bordering on Ta' Xbiex, with its famed yacht marina and Embassy Row. The population is approximately 7,300. The word Gżira means "island" in Maltese, and the town is named after Manoel Island which lies just adjacent to the town. The seafront of Gżira is famed for its views of the walled city of Valletta, which are illuminated at night, forming a picturesque backdrop to Manoel Island, the yacht marina and a seafront public garden.

MANOEL ISLAND in Gżira's Marsamxett Harbour, was originally known as l'Isola del Vescovo or "the Bishop's Island"). In 1643 Jean Paul Lascaris, Grandmaster of the Knights of Malta, constructed a quarantine hospital (lazzaretto) on the island, in an attempt to control the periodic influx of plague and cholera on board visiting ships.

During World War II, Manoel Island and its fort were used as a naval base by the Royal Navy, at which time it was referred to variously as "HMS Talbot" or "HMS Phœnicia". The Chapel of St. Anthony was virtually destroyed following a direct hit by Luftwaffe bombers in March 1942.

For several years now, Manoel Island houses a quaint, informal sanctuary for ducks and other waterfowl, created and maintained by a local volunteer, and funded entirely by private donations near the bridge connecting the island with the main island.
