About the composer:
Payton MacDonald, born in 1974 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, is a composer, improviser, percussionist, and singer. He has created a unique body of work that draws upon his extensive experience with East Indian tabla drumming, American military rudimental drumming, Jazz, European classical music, and the American experimental tradition. MacDonald is currently as Associate Professor of Music at William Paterson University.
About the piece:
Devil Dance, written in 1996 for flute and hand drum, is a light encore piece. It uses several elements of Hindustani (North Indian) classical music, along with an interesting middle section wherein the flutist must sing and play two separate melodic lines at once.
