SUB HIM, if you haven't already.

Released in 2007 on No Quater.

BSC is a experimental / noise / improv / avant guarde quartet. They have been releasing music since 1993. This is their 4th album.

Operator Dead is 4 tracks of heavily electronic based noise improvisations. Each group member plays "electronics" as well as other "tools" such as junkboxes, objects, computers and acoustic appraisers. A violin, drum kit and trumpet are also used.

The music itself is very loud and computer based. All manner of noise, electronic sounds are accumulated and slowly layered onto one another. Most of the tracks are built upon the ebb and flow of this persistent humming and some free jazz inspired drumming.

There are some moments when the bombast calms momentarily, that are still heavily programmed and digitally manufactured, but they are rather short lived and are not all that soothing.

This album failed to make a lasting impression on me. I found it difficult to listen to, not because it was too noisy, but because i felt it lacked any kind of purpose or emotion. It did have some brief areas where some sound combinations sounded rather interesting, but the most part, I felt it was just a disarray of some screeching and glitchy distortion just for improv sakes.

I did not find it rewarding. It was rather tedious at times. Nothing was overly impressive in terms of technical skill or execution, except perhaps the drumming.

The sound of an intergalactic space station dying a slow and painful death.

1.9/5
