PUBLISHED:  Jul 22, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Columbia 7540) Out of England, this tune recorded in March 1965 is a testament to the influence of Phil Spector's 'Wall Of Sound' beyond the United States. Recorded at London's Oriole Studios with engineer, Michael Ross-Trevor, this one shot single by fourteen year old Dany Chandelle was produced, arranged and conducted by Mark Wirtz.

In 2012, engineer, Mike Ross-Trevor remembered, ".....I was the engineer on this recording with Mark Wirtz and yes, we were going for the Spector sound. I remember the sessions very well. I think Mark and I were blown away on the sessions. We knew we were creating something very unusual. Mark and I still talk about this record."

(A competing version of 'Lying Awake' was also recorded in 1965 by actress, Benice Swanson.)

The following was from a 1965 EMI records press release about this single:

'FOR THE RECORD' - An EMI BIOGRAPHY
DANY CHANDELLE
Cute and pretty, DANY CHANDELLE smiles when she remembers her first appearance on television, for it was one she never intended to make. Her singing teacher had taken her along to a studio to make a demo disc. When the tape was played back, there were some 'yeah yeah's' on it that she certainly hadn't sung. Everyone kidded her she had and they tried again with the same result. By this time Dany was getting very confused until suddenly someone told her she was on 'Candid Camera' and her teacher had known all along. "It seemed funny at the time," says Dany, "and I signed the form giving permission for it to be used without really knowing what it was. When I saw it, I didn't think it was funny after all."
Dany is only 14 years old and was born in Leicester. Her father is French and her mother half French and half Scottish. Real name is Jackie Lasalle and she was born on September 14, 1950. The family moved to London 10 years ago. She started singing at a party when she was only 6 because all her friends were doing the same, and won an umbrella. "I hated pop music when I was a kid," she says, "but I was a bit of a problem at school. The headmistress suggested I take up drama lessons because it would be good for me to have something else to do and as Mum used to be an actress, I started for fun."
It began when she was 10 and she stayed at the first drama school for three years studying dancing and drama and appearing in several shows. She has just started attending another school which combines drama with ordinary lessons. After a while, she became interested in singing and took lessons from a well known teacher. A demo disc she made was played to independent record producer Mark Wirtz, who liked her voice and recorded her towards the end of last year. However, he was not happy at the time but came across a good song early this year called 'LYING AWAKE' which is the top side of her first disc.
Dany still has another year to go at school, but doesn't think she is too young to be in the world of pop music. Being at stage school she will be able to do most work that comes along. One day she hopes to have made enough progress to be able to give up singing and become an actress which is her big interest. She likes going out with friends, singing, clothes, Elvis Presley, Brenda lee and recording. She dislikes any types of outdoor sports.

'LYING AWAKE' by DANY CHANDELLE is coupled with 'I LOVE YOU (LOVE YOU)' on Columbia DB 7540.
