Deanna Durbin (1921-) is another example of a singer capable of singing a very wide range of music, including opera, but who chose a film and recording career. The choice worked well for her, and even though she had been offered the opportunity to audition for the Metropolitan Opera, she did not follow up on it, being at the time heavily committed to movie studio contracts. She was enormously popular in the late 30's and throughout the 40's, and was very successful financially. From the 50's on, she steadily withdrew into private life, where she has remained until today. Though she used the medium to great advantage, she was never very fond of the movie business. She is now 89 years old. Like Judy Garland, she was convincing in even the simplest melodies, such as this Foster classic.
