"Whether I could have known you or not, this is a substantial part in my life. A part where I changed as a person and you made your mark on the world.

I never expected for this to happen, that cold morning in 2004. I never expected for you to change me at such a young age. The night before was the second time I'd held you, you were so small you could almost lie across my two palms. I could hear from your cry that you were hungry, struggling. I held the back of your head up with my arm and fed you for the first time. I could tell that you were trying to take in the milk to make you stronger, to make up for the months you didn't have with mum.

Your small hands that could only just wrap around my small 7 year old finger just showed how early you joined this world. It was too early. I remember sleeping perfectly, like a hibernating hedgehog. I was so contempt with the way things were, I had my mother, my step father there for me and I had you, to love, cherish and protect.

Your photo on the fridge was the center point of the house, everyone spotted and complimented on how small and adorable you were. They were not wrong. My mother would be asked how you were over Christmas and mother would always say you were fine, when she knew herself you weren't.

All I can say is when I woke up I was surrounded by rushing and the cries of my mother. I didn't hear you. Nobody heard you. You didn't make a sound. Peaking out that door to see an ambulance outside was where my 7 year old brain didn't comprehend the seriousness of the ordeal.

Getting in the ambulance with my mother and father, I heard my father whisper "its not your fault." my mum sat there crying, balling until complete silence. Looking upon your small fragile body, she didn't say a word and the tears were gone. And so were you."
