After consuming a fabulous chocolate bar this evening I decided to replace my "industry" bio with one in my own words. By the way, if you ever want to show me some love, bring me chocolate! I've written this bio around questions I've been getting here on myspace so it might change from time to time as I continue to get more questions.
Did you always think you'd do music?
I actually thought I would be a doctor even though I really can't stand the site of blood so I don't know how that was going to work out! I ended up in music by accident. Literally. My life changed after I was a pedestrian hit and thrown by a car while in college. The pain and shock of it all was a reminder that in life you gotta find what you are passionate about and go for it. During my recovery I had time to soul search and figure it out. I realized that I've always been a writer and that I could marry my short stories and poetry with the melodies I had floating in my head.
So did you jump on it?
No! I graduated in Economics and got sucked into the corporate world and hated it. The only thing that kept me sane were the open mic nights that I would frequent or the cafe shows I would do from time to time. The start up company I was working for went under and I've never been so excited to lose a job!
The Plunge
I didn't go back to the "work for someone else" corporate world and decided to start my own record company. I started recording and recording. I've put out music to great response and I've met some amazing people at shows. I played a show at a Borders in Connecticut and met a woman who drove 2 hours to come to see the set. She spent more time driving than she did at the 45 minute show and was delighted to chat afterwards. So cool.
So have you made it?
Wow. Now that's a question. I figure that if you are reading this bio then I have made it! At the moment making it is being able to do this full time and have people appreciate the music enough to take time out of their day to either write a message; come to a show; or find their credit card to purchase the CD or a song. No one owes me their time and so when time is spent on my music by a complete stranger then Hell Yes I've made it. It also cracks me up to see bootleg copies of my album available in Russia--now that has to make it official!
Describe your music
It's Soul making love to Pop and giving birth to your new favorite genre that goes down easy with great company and wine. This new album "The Road To Adam" is a map of my failures and successes in love along with commentary from stories I've heard. It moves me when y'all write to tell me how they speak to you.
Are you originally from San Francisco?
I hail from Ghana originally. I left with my family at an early age and lived in several countries including Canada, The Bahamas and Puerto Rico. It was definitely a neat way to grow up. The Bay Area is the place I've spent the longest time so far so at the moment it's home.
What do you think of the state of music today?
Oh, this could take time. But the short answer is that music is still all about the listener/fan. So if you hear something that you like and moves you from a new artist spread the word and tell friends. And in this digital age if you don't want to buy a whole record you can buy a song(s). It all counts and goes a long way and is greatly appreciated! The best part about music today for me is the direct communication that we artist and fans can now have. I've met some great people through myspace who I ended up casting in my new music video for "First Dance Song" which will be coming out soon. That was a cool experience so definitely write me!
