At fifteen minutes (or longer, depending on chosen tempi) this is one of the longest and most challenging piano rags ever composed. It includes two fugues and an extended "development" section that ends with a denouement in which the rag theme and fugue subject are masterfully combined. This piece was premiered on KPFA radio in Berkeley, CA on 4 October, 1991 in celebration of the grand opening of Pacific Radio's (then) brand new headquarters. It was played on a computer-driven Yamaha Disklavier piano. Nicolas Slonimsky gives it the honor of mentioning its premiere in his celebrated book MUSIC SINCE 1900, which chronologically catalogs notable musical premieres of the 20th century. The turntable change-of-speed effect is acknowledged as one of the composer's idiosyncratic harmonic techniques.
