Singer, songwriter, producer and DJ, Nicolette has had a long and happy (and ongoing) adventure in making and recording music. She has also been lucky enough to work with some outstanding music-makers, including Shut Up and Dance, Massive Attack, 4-Hero, Alex Empire, Plaid, Felix, Roni Size, DJ Cam, and many, many wonderful others. The journey continues as her fourth album is imminent, with the first EP from it, "Modern Stories", out now.
Nicolette's voice and vibe, reminiscent of and harking back to the jazz singers and performers of the 1920s and 30s, combined with the striking and strangely catchy modernity of her backing tracks (bouncy space-age electronica?) has created a sound that can be described as an new hybrid of jazz and synth, or simply as a space-age jazz for the 21st century.
She sees herself as a populist and accepts that her songs are in the spirit of jazz in the sense of their pushing barriers and creating brand new ways of harmonising and texturing sound, whilst remaining appealing and sing-alongable. Nicolette has been widely called "Billie Holiday on Acid", and her voice has also been compared to other Jazz/Blues singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, Bessie Smith. But the best way of getting to know her music is to listen to and enjoy its inventiveness, truthfulness, power, and ultimate joie de vivre. This is not an accident, since Nicolette's intention with her music is to empower people and make them feel good about themselves by telling them the real truth about life (which we all know). She believes that love is all we need, and that love is our greatest and only real power
Nicolette: "I write songs for people to listen to and get naturally high on. Even my slow emotional ballads have this energetic feeling. I want people to listen to my work and know that they are wonderful, I want my work to remind people of their wonderfulness constantly. That's why my songs are uplifting, people feel good when they listen to them. If they're feeling discouraged, they're the kind of songs that will make them open up again, because it reminds them of who they are: special and good."
So what inspired Nicolette to create this song? "Self-esteem", she says simply. " I wanted to create an anthem for self-esteem. I think times have changed, the age of false "modesty" is outdated, and it's OK and in fact really important to say that you love yourself and that you're a great person. Only people with self-esteem and self-love are going to be at peace with themselves. And people at peace with themselves are not going to start wars or to see fighting or
conflict as an option on any level. So to me that's important. But… on another level, it's a song promoting fun, joy in oneself, and enjoying life; it's designed for happiness…because we deserve it!"
So what's been going on in your world? Nicolette: "I've been loving myself. Pouring love into the deepest depths of myself. In so doing, I discovered that we humans are of boundless depth, it just goes on and on.beyond depth. We just are really.boundless and deep beyond depth. Words are inadequate to say what I mean! But everyone knows this, so my stuttering won't matter too much hopefully! :) I had thought we humans were contained. But we really are not! "
