"Тогда вступил Игорь-князь в золотое стремя и поехал по чистому полю. Солнце ему тьмой путь преграждало, ночь стенаниями грозными птиц пробудила, свист звериный поднялся, встрепенулся Див, кличет на вершине дерева, велит прислушаться чужой земле: Волге, и Поморию, и Посулию, и Сурожу, и Корсуню, и тебе, Тмутороканский идол.
А половцы непроторенными дорогами устремились к Дону великому: скрипят телеги в полуночи, словно лебеди встревоженные. Игорь к Дону войско ведет. Уже гибели его ожидают птицы по дубравам, волки грозу навывают по яругам, орлы клекотом зверей на кости зовут, лисицы брешут на червленые щиты".

The Cumans, by uncharted routes, raced toward the great Don. Their carts screech at midnight, a sound like startled swans. Igor is leading his warriors to the Don. In the oak groves birds foretell his misfortunes, and in the ravines wolves stir up a storm; eagles call beasts to the bones; foxes bark at scarlet shields".
