For the occasion of the 30th anniversary in 2013 of the Emrys Foundation -- an Upstate support organization for writers and other artists - 16 poets were invited to write poems inspired by paintings of Helen Dupré Moseley (1887-1984) on display in the Greenville County Museum of Art. The poets were urged to make their work brief and youth-friendly. The paintings are entirely untitled, as are the resulting poems; the composer has taken the liberty of creating titles for these six songs.
Moseley lived most of her life in Spartanburg and first picked up a paintbrush at age 60. Completely untutored, she produced a number of whimsical and surreal large-scale canvases. Some think her images were making political or social comment on the mores of her day, but Moseley left behind no titles, dates of completion, or written commentary of any kind, insisting that viewers decide for themselves. They are indeed where the wondering grows.

Soprano Mary Freeman is frequently seen in area concert and theater productions and last appeared at the FAC in the premiere of Imprint. Dr. Connie Frigo is professor of Saxophone at the University of Georgia and a frequent participant Emrys projects. Our Thanks go to these fabulous musicians for their part in this project. Thanks also to the Greenville County Museum of Art for the use of the images, the poets for their poems, and to Keller Freeman for her organizational skills, cheerleading, and gift for bringing artists together.
