“And your breath smelt like ANZAC Day, bitumen and horse sh!t… I could tell you’d been walking, I could tell you’d been hit”. So laments WA Americana five-piece Davey Craddock & The Spectacles’ new single Better Alone, a soaring, acidic take on the traditional love song (you can listen to it in the player on the right of this page).

Released on Feb 1 as a taste of the band’s forthcoming debut album, Better Alone was recorded live to tape at Perth’s RADA studios with Davey’s band The Spectacles, an award-winning team of gun WA players. The song swells from a woozy, bar-room confessional into a country epic, with WA songstress Felicity Groom providing backing vocals.

2014 saw Davey and his band receive WAMi nominations for Country Act of The Year and Folk Song Of The Year, nominations at the upcoming WA Country Music Awards for Best Act and Best Songwriter and an invitation by Australian folk icons The Waifs to support them at two sold out homecoming shows. Davey will now kick off 2015 with a solo tour of Victoria including a show at the idyllic Kyneton Music Festival.

Back in WA, Davey and the band will launch Better Alone at Fremantle Arts Centre on March 8 before joining Timothy Nelson & The Infidels and Rainy Day Women at Bunbury Entertainment Centre on March 21. In full band format The Spectacles are drummer Todd Pickett (Kill Devil Hills, WAM Multi-instrumentalist of the Year), guitarist Luke Dux (The Floors, WAM Guitarist of the Year), bassist Pete Stone (former Abbe May & The Rockin’ Pneumonia) and pianist Mo Wilson (Mo Wilson & The Drivers).
