Mountains & Rainbows Lester’s Way 45 (Muddy Mitten)

Talk about a record that creeps up on you, finds a crack in your skin, slithers between flesh & muscle, and just lays there getting warmer & warmer. Detroit weirdoes who share members with Tyvek & Little Claw, Mountains & Rainbows turn out two smart-dumb psych crawlers. The bass & drums rarely go further out than a pulse, the guitars pick around in a primitive approximation of Reed/Cale cum Mayo Thompson, but with a fall down feeling. This record borders on near ineptitude, especially the flip, Tunnel Vision (which at first listen sounds like a throwaway but it isn’t); but that accounts for a lot of its charm. Luckily that charm is mated with a hypnotic pull and it is that pull that got me to listen to this more a second time…and a third and now a couple hours after first putting this on, it has returned to the platter for listen number one dozen. -SS (Z Gun)
