Hey there, I'm your friend Mike Doughty. I'm making a new album, called Stellar Motel, produced by DJ Good Goose; I've also got an album of 14 Soul Coughing songs, played live (some with a band, some acoustic) called Live at Ken's House.

As with my last album, pledgers will get to see about a dozen mini-docs of the album being made. However, I'm doing something weird with Stellar Motel: not only the recording of the album, but the writing of the songs will be in the videos. Good Goose and I have a process in which I improvise parts, then he selects stuff, puts them over beats; I improvise vocals with nonsense syllables, then he selects from that; then I flesh out the lyrics. It's fun to watch.

I toured a show consisting entirely of Soul Coughing songs in November of 2013; Catherine Popper played upright bass, Pete Wilhoit played drums, and I played guitar and sampler. It was pretty fierce. Four days after the end of the tour, we laid the supertight versions on tape, which is now Live at Ken's House.

Of course, there's stuff to pledge on. Weird stuff! Like lyrics that I'll type out on an old IBM Selectric typewriter, and sign. Songs recorded on a microcassette recorder (with the recorder included, lest you don't have a circa-1989 answering machine laying around). There'll be a t-shirt and a poster exclusive to pledgers--and pledgers will actually get to vote on the designs for each.

On the higher end of things: there private shows (I'll come to wherever you are), and, notably, I found the original handwritten lyrics for "True Dreams" and "Janine" in notebooks from the early 1990s. You can get those very pages, the originals, framed.

I should note: if records are your thing, both of these albums will be double-vinyl LPs. Pretty groovy.

Hope you jump in to this! It's somewhat of an insane idea for me.
