M'Girl [pronounced ma-girl], an Aboriginal Women's Ensemble was founded by Renae Morriseau in 2004 and features a cadre of talented women from a variety of First Nations women (Saulteaux, Anishnawbe, Tahltan, Dene) all residing in the Greater Vancouver Area.
M'Girl's first recording entitled Fusion of Two Worlds (independent) was produced by Kat Hendrix (session drummer on Heart's 'Dreamboat Annie' and Terry Jack's 'Seasons in the Sun' albums) and featured songwriting and vocal styles from Sheila Maracle (Eyes Wide Open, Don't Have To), Tiare Laporte (Astam Awasisak, Lay With Me), Cheryl L'Hirondelle (Love Medicine, Kitaskinanaw) with a guest appearance by Skeena Reece(spoken word on Astam Awasisak). As well as important contributions from keepers of traditional, ceremonial and social songs: Shirley James: Nlakapamux (Healing Song, Lullaby), Frank Settee: Cree (Honour Song) and Joseph Naytowhow: Cree (co-writer on kitaskinanaw), Renae and the girls were joined in the studio by an all-star lineup of players.
