A thrilling broadcast with Melchior on his best behavior, with some of his greatest singing. A strict maestro like Toscanini was ideal for him - no hanging on to "Wälse" for 18 seconds or more as he was prone to do (I never mind and enjoy his irreverent displays of strength - he was a giant among Wagnerians). Here he stays with the beat, unlike the critical climax of his recording with Bruno Walter, which is a letdown when he typically strays from the conductor. His singing is simply better here.
